The diversity of fiber laser applications in medicine

Many articles about lasers that can be found on the Web are about high-power fiber lasers, which are showy, associated with science fiction, and are commonly used in industry. However, fiber lasers are popular with buyers in other industries. Although they are not as powerful, they have found their way into many areas, such as medicine.

Fiber laser technology benefits

Fiber laser technology is considered to have a great impact in medicine by creating new applications. Thanks to their unique features and versatility, they can be applied both in diagnostic imaging and surgery. Despite their lower power rates, they are able to provide the highest levels of accuracy. In fact, it allows providing safe and contactless processes for the patients. Moreover, medical personnel find them one of the easiest to use equipment, thanks to fiber lasers‘ compactness.
There are various fiber lasers that are able to operate in their unique manner and can be applied for many treatments. Laser beam light can be delivered whether continuously or intermittently. By adjusting the wavelength, specialists can determine the effect on the skin and achieve the desired results. All of these factors can be regulated during fiber laser manufacturing depending on the effect a laser needs to provide.

Most common applications of the fiber lasers

Here are several spheres where fiber lasers can be used:

Medical diagnostics and imaging

Nowadays, specialists have learned to detect a number of various diseases by registration of any changes in molecular composition. For example, endoscopic fiber catheters can provide an imaging diagnostic of an artery during bypass surgery performance.

Optical Coherence Tomography

Fiber lasers with a large spectrum are usually applied in OCT to provide cross-section images for diagnostics.

Aesthetic Applications

Medical procedures such as tattoo removal or skin resurfacing usually require CO2 lasers. However, recent research has shown that conventional fiber lasers can also be efficient and used effectively.

Laser Surgery

Laser surgery uses light beams for surgical procedures. When light from the laser beam hits the skin, there are several ways the skin responds. The skin can reflect the light away, scatter it, or let it through layers of the skin. There are certain parts of the skin that absorb the light causing different tissue changes.
Mostly, fiber lasers are applied to destroy or shrink tumors, to seal small blood vessels in preventing blood loss, etc.
All in all, we should say that fiber laser systems still remain one of the most effective medical instruments proven to gain the trust of both medical specialists and patients.
